What is shrinkage-compensating concrete (SCC)?
Not to be confused with Self Consolidated Concrete also SCC. Shrinkage-compensating concrete (SCC) is a specialized type of concrete designed to reduce or eliminate the risk of cracking caused by drying shrinkage. It incorporates an expansive component, such as a Type G component, which allows the concrete to expand slightly during curing. This controlled expansion offsets the contraction that naturally occurs as concrete dries, ensuring durability and structural integrity over time. It is a Type g component governed by the American Concrete Institute (ACI 223-21) concrete guide.
How does Shrinkage Compensating Concrete (SCC) work?
SCC works by introducing an expansive agent into the concrete mix. During the hydration process, the expansive agent reacts with water, creating controlled expansion within the concrete. This expansion counteracts the tensile forces caused by drying shrinkage, preventing cracks from developing. The balance between expansion and shrinkage ensures that the concrete remains stable and durable under various conditions.
What are the benefits of Green Canvas Shrinkage Compensating Concrete?
Green Canvas Concrete offers several key advantages, including:
- Crack Prevention: It minimizes or prevents cracks caused by shrinkage, enhancing the lifespan of concrete structures.
- Enhanced Durability: SCC is more resilient to environmental stressors, such as temperature changes and moisture fluctuations.
- Reduced Maintenance Costs: With fewer cracks and joints, SCC requires less long-term maintenance, saving money over the structure’s lifecycle.
- Design Flexibility: SCC allows for seamless, jointless applications in large projects like warehouses and industrial floors.
Where can Green Canvas Shrinkage Compensating Concrete be used?
Shrinkage Compensating Concrete (SCC) is widely used in a variety of applications, including:
- Industrial Floors: To create jointless floors for warehouses or factories, enhancing flatness and durability.
- Water-Retaining Structures: Such as tanks, reservoirs, and dams, where watertight performance is essential.
- Transportation Projects: Including bridge decks, highways, and airport runways, where durability and longevity are critical.
- Other Large-Scale Installations: SCC is also suitable for tilt-up construction, parking structures, and precast elements.
How does Shrinkage Compensating Concrete compare to conventional concrete?
Traditional concrete often contracts as it dries, leading to cracks and structural issues. SCC, on the other hand, incorporates an expansive agent to counteract this shrinkage. Compared to traditional concrete, SCC:
- Reduces the need for contraction joints.
- Minimizes cracking and maintenance requirements.
- Ensures better dimensional stability, especially in large or complex projects.
How is Type G Different From Type K Concrete in Aci 223-21
Type K component is imported by CTS cement and is a product that has had excellent success as a shrinkage component for many years. However, here are some fundamental differences of U.S. manufactured Green Canvas, by Productions Team, Inc.
- Green Canvas has, on average, half the percentage, generally 8% of cementitious in the design mix, compared to Type K.
- Type G has less water needs than a Type K component
- Due to water loss, the scheduling of truck deliveries to site can be critical
- No water cure needed
How is Green Canvas Different From Type K Concrete in Aci 223-21
Type K concrete is made by CTS cement, but imported from out of the country and has excellent success as a shrinkage component for many years. Here are some basic differences.
- Green Canvas has on average half percentage, generally 8% of cementitious in the design mix. Less logistic costs
- Manufactured by Green Canvas a dba of Productions Team, inc in U.S.A, logistic costs
- Not a type K component, less water needs
- No water cure needed

How long does Green Canvas Shrinkage Compensating Concrete perform compared to shrinkage reducing admixtures (SRA)?
SRA’s or shrinkage-reducing admixtures will, in time, go into expansion. Green Canvas can not and will not go into expansion. When mixed and installed correctly, shrinkage-compensating concrete offers a lifespan 2 1/2x longer than that of traditional concrete. Its resistance to cracking and environmental stressors contributes to less wear and tear over time, extending the structure’s durability.
Is Shinkage Compensating concrete cost-effective?
SCC can reduce long-term costs by minimizing the need for maintenance and repairs. Although the initial material costs may be slightly higher than traditional concrete, the savings in joint cutting, joint filling, joint repairs, and downtime make it a cost-effective solution in the long run. On some 20,000 sqf projects the cost could be a wash.
Can SCC be customized for specific projects?
Yes, SCC can be tailored to suit the needs of specific applications by adjusting the mix design, including the percentage of expansive agents. This customization ensures optimal performance depending on factors like climate, project size, and load requirements.
Does SCC require special installation techniques?
While the installation of SCC is similar to that of traditional concrete, professionals must carefully control the mixing process to ensure the proper dispersion of the expansive agent. Adequate curing is also essential to achieve its shrinkage-compensating properties with type k and are some time problematic, not the case with Green Canvas Shrinkage Compensating concrete.
Are there environmental benefits to using Green Canvas SCC?
SCC can contribute to sustainability by reducing material waste and lowering maintenance needs over time. With fewer cracks and longer lifespan, it minimizes repairs and associated resource consumption, making it an eco-friendlier option for many projects.
